The practice of locking AEDs in the UK and requiring a call to 999 for a code before access serves several purposes, despite it seeming like a barrier in emergencies:
Vandalism and Theft Prevention:
AEDs are valuable, both financially and in their life-saving function. Locking them helps prevent theft or misuse, ensuring they remain available and in good condition when truly needed.
Guidance During Emergencies:
When a person calls 999, they are connected to a dispatcher who can guide them through using the AED effectively. For people who may feel uncertain or stressed, this guidance ensures they use the AED confidently and correctly.
Monitoring and Maintenance:
By tracking AED use through a centralized system, authorities know when an AED has been accessed. This process allows prompt replacement, maintenance, or battery checks, which is vital for the AED’s reliability.
Location Tracking:
AED locations are registered, and a call to 999 allows dispatchers to direct callers to the nearest AED if the closest one isn’t accessible, optimizing response times.
While locking AEDs does add an extra step, the intent is to balance ease of access with safety, security, and support.
Anyone can use it. No training necessary.
For a unconscious person NOT breathing normally!
